We are pleased this event includes a 60 minute lecture by Laura Lindstrand, JD, Civil Rights Specialist for the Washington State Human Rights Commission. “Freedom from Discrimination - Know Your Rights” will educate the audience about the Human Rights Commission, the Law Against Discrimination, and the recent breastfeeding legislation. CERPS have been applied for. Cost for this event is $25, or $20 if you are attending the Business Case for Breastfeeding Training. When you register for the Business Case for Breastfeeding you will receive a discount code to use when you purchase your BCW Awards tickets. Participants will:

  • Receive an introduction to RCW 49.60, the Law Against Discrimination. The audience will learn the classes of persons who are protected by the law, the various theories of discrimination that are used by courts as a framework for analyzing discrimination cases, and the burden of proof that is required of a party seeking redress. The audience will take away an understanding of their rights under the law.
  • Be able to describe the Human Rights Commission – who we are, what our mission is, what we do, and our procedures for dealing with cases. The audience will gain an understanding of the complaint and investigative process, and of our neutrality.
  • Develop a greater understanding of Human Rights Commission’s newest jurisdiction, breastfeeding in a place of public accommodation. This will answer, or at least get the audience thinking about important questions, such as what is a place of public accommodation, how far does that definition extend, and what activities are protected. Information will be shared about the number and types of inquiries and/or cases the Human Rights Commission has received related to breastfeeding, and some examples and scenarios will be provided.

The BCW Awards highlight a Washington business and two individuals who have shown leadership in and significantly contributed to promoting and supporting breastfeeding as a vital part of the health and development of children and their families. The awards include: The Outstanding Employer Award, The Nancy Danoff, MD Spirit of Service Award and The MaryAnn O'Hara, MD Physician Leadership Award.

This event will begin at 6:00 with a no-host bar and appetizers, followed by the BCW Awards and Laura Lindstrand’s lecture. Located 15 minutes north of downtown Seattle, the Lynnwood Convention Center is immediately off of I-5, offers plenty of free parking and is next to the Olympus Women’s Spa.
