World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week August 1-7, 2010

The 2010 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) theme is Just 10 Steps. This year, WBW will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration, which called for the implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities. Since that time, about 28% of all maternity facilities have implemented the Ten Steps and have been certified by the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). However, in many settings exclusive breastfeeding rates have plateaued or are declining, in part due to reduced BFHI programming and insufficient training.

This year, the WBW objectives include bringing attention to the important role the Ten Steps play in increasing rates of exclusive breastfeeding, ensuring that maternal and child health care workers are adequately trained in lactation support, and to reinvigorate health systems and providers to support women in their breastfeeding goals.
